| The volcanic
mountains rising in the hazy distance set up the back-drop for tropical
sunsets. Experience bathing in hidden waterfalls on the edge of
steaming rainforests filled with tropical flora. Look out upon a
sun-splashed coastline with crystal blue water and palm trees swaying
in a soft ocean breeze.
It is most
Maui residents fervent fantasy to retire to this side of the island
with its pristine environment and escape the congestion and noise
of a busy city lifestyle.
Upon finding
yourself in Kipahulu you will be within walking distance from
Haleakala National Park, and Oheo Gulch, (more commonly referred
to as The Seven Sacred Pools). These are a series of falls cascading
into seven large pools before reaching the sea. The pools are
set in a natural rock formation bordered by cliffs. You will find
excellent swimming holes.
Take a 4-mile
hike along a jungle trail through an enchanted bamboo forest made
up of thousands of bamboo poles which make a gigantic bamboo wind
chime. As you proceed you will come to Waimoku Falls. At 400 ft.
high it is one of Maui's highest waterfalls. To be there can have
almost a cathederal-like religous quality.
After leaving
7-pools, 1.2 miles down the road you will find another special
point of interest. Charles Lindbergh's Grave is set in a stunning,
tranquil background of shade trees on a cliff-site overlooking
the ocean and beside Palapala Ho'omau Church.
As you ramble
down the road you may be fortunate to happen upon some of Kipahulu's
streams & various waterfalls. Be sure to take a picnic lunch
or snack, water and insect repellent with you to make your adventure
more complete.
